CTB AWARDS 9 CONTRACTS WORTH $96.5 MILLION
Projects include widening section of U.S. 1 in Prince William County near Occoquan River

RICHMOND, Va. – The Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) awarded nine contracts on Wednesday worth approximately $96.5 million for major infrastructure improvements.

The projects – primarily in the Northern Virginia District of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) – will improve mobility, enhance safety and extend the life of the state’s transportation network.

The contracts are for projects that will:

· Widen a section of U.S. 1 in Prince William County

The CTB awarded a contract worth approximately $43.2 million to Fort Myer Construction Corporation of Washington, D.C., to widen and improve a section of U.S. 1 in Prince William County.

This project will widen U.S. 1 from four to six lanes between Mary's Way and the approach to the Occoquan River bridge. Utility work is already under way in this area to accommodate the roadway improvements.

Occoquan Road also will be improved with median and turn lanes from U.S. 1 to south of Horner Road. The signal at U.S. 1 and Occoquan Road will remain, and traffic operations will be improved by the additional through and turn lanes on both roads.

The project also will provide enhanced access to the Woodbridge VRE kiss-and-ride facility for vehicles and pedestrians.

· Provide signal maintenance throughout VDOT’s Southwest Regional Operations area

The CTB awarded a contract worth approximately $14.4 million to Elite Contracting Group Inc. of Petersburg, Va., for signals in VDOT’s Southwest Regional Operations area, which includes the Bristol, Lynchburg and Salem districts.

The two-year task-order contract, which has two one-year renewal options, will allow the firm to maintain and repair existing traffic signals and other traffic-control devices and install new signals and devices. Locations for this work will be determined as needed.

· Provide seven paving contracts for spring road maintenance

The CTB also awarded seven “plant-mix” contracts worth an approximate total of $45 million for paving on Virginia’s interstates and primary and secondary roads. The contracts are to the following firms:

• 1) Fort Myer Construction Corporation of Washington, D.C., approximately $6.5 million (interstate – Northern Virginia District)

• 2) Rogers Group Inc., Nashville, Tenn., approximately $5.4 million (primary – Bristol District)

• 3) Colony Construction Inc., Powhatan, Va., approximately $5.7 million (primary – Richmond District)

• 4) Branscome Inc., Williamsburg, Va., approximately $7.8 million (primary – Fredericksburg District)

• 5) Virginia Paving Company, division of Lane Construction Corp., Cheshire, Conn., approximately $6.1 million (primary – Northern Virginia District)

• 6) Virginia Paving Company, division of Lane Construction Corp., Cheshire, Conn., approximately $6.4 million (secondary – Northern Virginia District)

• 7) Arthur Construction Company Inc., Dulles, Va., approximately $7 million (secondary – Northern Virginia District)

In advance of each CTB meeting, VDOT Commissioner Charlie Kilpatrick also approves contracts worth up to $5 million in value.

From the February 2016 bid letting, the commissioner approved 78 contracts worth an approximate total of $156 million for construction and maintenance projects on Virginia’s interstates and primary and secondary roads.

Appointed by the governor, the 17-member CTB establishes the administrative policies for Virginia's transportation system. The CTB allocates highway funding to specific projects, locates routes and provides funding for airports, seaports and public transportation. The board normally meets on the third Wednesday of the month in months when action meetings are scheduled.
