The completion of the widening of Route 58 will provide much-needed safety updates to the four-lane facility between Abingdon and Damascus, a highly traveled route for commuter and recreational traffic. The project is part of the Route 58 Corridor Development Program to enhance Southwest Virginia's transportation network and foster economic development in the region.
Phase IV Route 58 widening from the West Corporate Limits of Damascus to near Route 708–Rhea Valley is the upcoming phase of the project, contingent on future funding.

Virginia officials are in negotiations with the private partner in the planned U.S. 460 road project. The project was pushed forward by former Gov. Bob McDonnell, but fell through. These negotiations are hoped to help recover some of the $300 million that were put toward this project; these funds may be used to help with other more sustainable projects, such as the Route 58 widening.
