New economic coalition targets transportation funding

HB2 “certainly was a convener for the conversation, because… the amount of transportation dollars that is coming back to this part of the state is significantly less than northern Virginia and Hampton roads,” according to Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce CEO Christine Kennedy. Kennedy is part of the newly formed Blue Ridge Economic Coalition (BREC), which represents approximately eight counties and three cities in central and southwestern Virginia that have come together in an effort to bolster economic activity and establish priorities, such as transportation infrastructure.

Virginia plans to pull politics out of transportation spending

On June 17, the Commonwealth Transportation Board approved Gov. Terry McAuliffe’s proposal to score new transportation projects based on six categories: safety, congestion, accessibility, economic development, environmental quality and land use. This allows project funding decisions to escape some of the influences of politics and be made based on benefits to Virginia.
