VBT : Consequences of Insufficient Funding, Part 2 May 02 2017 In part 1 of this series, we talked about the number of projects that missed out on funding in Round 1 of our SMART SCALE (HB2) project, as well as the likelihood that an even greater number of projects could go unfunded in Round 2. Many of the submitted projects may seem small-scale, but these upgrades, improvements and new infrastructure are all crucial to maintaining a high quality of life in Virginia. Not only do they improve road safety, these projects also increase the connectivity of our citizens. Some of the benefits of these projects are observable and measurable—less traffic means less time lost or spent in the car. But many of the benefits that are even more vital are less obvious. Better transportation infrastructure and safety means that first responders—ambulances, firefighters, police—can reach their destinations more quickly and safely when it counts. Families can more easily access the services and goods they need. For example, in Fredericksburg, some of the submitted projects for Round 2 include: • Improvements to the intersection of Route 738 and Route 639. • Upgrades to the Fredericksburg line of the Virginia Railway Express. • Improvements to intersections on Route 208: Breckenridge Drive and Hood Drive. • I-95 Exit 126, Route 1 Southbound onto Southpoint Parkway. These projects have the potential to improve road safety, traffic, accessibility and/or other factors for those in and around the Fredericksburg area. But unfortunately, the lack of sufficient funding means it is likely that not all of them will be able to move forward with the funding they need.
