Local DVM : Virginia Department of Transportation to act on roadway improvement suggestions

The seven-lane Millwood Pike bridge over I-81 at exit 313 in Frederick County was built in 1964 and VDOT officials say it is reaching the end of its' service life. They say it will take over $25 million to replace the bridge but officials say it could be included in the commonwealth transportation board's six-year improvement program. The program is updated every year to determine how state and federal funding is allocated among transportation repair projects.

"One of the major east-west routes going into Winchester it's never quiet here. There are something like 33 thousand vehicles per day crossing that bridge, it does carry three primary routes, route 17, route 50 and route 522, and as you might imagine it's always busy here." Ken Slack of Virginia Department of Transportation says.

Officials say a new bridge would  be constructed to last 75 years or more.
