VBT Blog : A Fair Funding Solution for our Roads and Bridges

A recent VDOT report discloses the unacceptable state of transportation in Virginia. According to the report, nearly 650 of Virginia’s bridges are classified as structurally deficient. And yet, thousands of Virginians have to continue driving across those bridges each day.

Our secondary roads are neglected as well. These secondary roads include the vast majority of non-highway or interstate roads. There are the roads that connect our neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, business and more—and over a third of them are in poor or mediocre condition.

Not only do crumbling roads and structures post a safety threat, leading to increased crashes and even fatalities, but they also increase congestion and cost Virginia drivers billions in lost time and car repairs each year.

But the 2020 Virginia General Assembly has an opportunity to make great strides in improving transportation funding. The Governor’s plan will raise millions of dollars for transportation through the fairest funding method—an increase in our gas tax, which is essentially a user fee. This means those that use the roads more will contribute more to their maintenance—including drivers from out-of-state.

This plan will raise millions for transportation by increasing Virginia’s gas tax by a few cents a year for three years—this will only cost the average driver a mere few dollars per month. Virginia’s gas tax is currently well below the national average and would remain that way even with this proposed increase. Plus, the financial impact to Virginia drivers will be offset by reducing other costs such as the vehicle registration and state inspection fees.

This is a fair funding solution that drives progress by fixing roads, improving safety and setting Virginia up to prosper in the next century. Show your support for the Governor’s transportation bills today!
